une promenade

Yesterday was almost..hot outside. I think we reached 67 degrees and it felt amaz. We went on a stroll around the neighborhood before dinner. Taking that first walk in the evening in what felt like spring seems too good to be true. We walked until it was almost completely dark. Every house we walked by had lights glowing inside. There were three houses in row that had a little scene. The first house had a huge window and right inside was a long table, holding a couple bottles of wine. At the moment we walked by, a few people came to the table, one person pouring the wine. Everyone looked happy. At the second house, a couple was eating dinner together. They seemed quiet, almost sad. Their walls were bright yellow. The third house had sheer curtains (that almost seemed to be swaying in the breeze but that was probably just my imagination running wild). A man was lighting candles at a small table. Behind him was a modern kitchen with tall, open shelving displaying beautiful ceramic pieces.

I loved encountering the little happenings that take place all around me in my neighborhood, how people eat around the same time, turn their lights on around the same time. During the winter we are very much homebodies. It felt good to remember that so much happens outside of what we are used to.

i love being outside people watching for this very reason. when i lived in boulder i loved walking around, sitting outside at cafes, and making up stories about the strangers i'd see.
