Strawberry, will you wait for me?

I love love love when someone admits something that they never thought they'd say out loud. Especially if it's ditsy. So I am going to take this rare opportunity to admit something. No one really ever taught me this, although it's rather obvious. Until recently, I didn't fully understand the notion that fruits and vegetables have seasons in which you eat them. I've been used to going to the store and seeing pretty much the same fruits and veggies available all year. I live for tomatoes. I've had a constant love affair with them. I eat them all year long. A few months ago, I was reading a famous chef's cookbook and he mentioned that he only eats produce that is in season. That he would only eat a tomato during so and so months. I was baffled. I thought for sure he was just being pretentious. I just kinda wrote it off, but secretly, it stuck with me and I started eyeing the produce section with the hairy eyeball when grocery shopping. I was filled with questions. Are you in season? Are you off limits? Do I need to wait for you until June? So, instead of wondering, I printed out an in season produce chart for Colorado since it's our goal this year to go to the farmer's market once a week. Lemme tell you, it feels good to get this off my chest. It's pretty insane that I never really put two and two together. Oh well, at least I didn't tell you the long story of how I found out that Massachusetts is above New York geographically (um, I thought it was near Georgia growing up).
